I can recall spending so much time searching the market for an ideal SSD enclosure because I wasn’t ready to spend my money on a device that overheats and has an abysmal performance. Most of the enclosures I saw had one or two features I didn’t like, and this continued until I stumbled on ASUS ROG STRIX Arion M.2 NVMe SSD Enclosure.
ASUS ROG STRIX Arion Speed
We are in the age where high-performance speed and massive storage capacity matters a lot, which is one reason why we have the ASUS ROG STRIX Arion M.2 NVMe SSD Enclosure designed to meet the needs of pro-gamers and to satisfy the demands of a tech-savvy. With a compelling design and its excellent performance, it is undoubtedly a combination of being super cool and extra fast.
The speed was very high when I installed the SSD, but I noticed a considerable drop to about 1000 Mbps when the temperature rose to 50 deg. Celcius. I also noticed that the performance began to throttle as the temperature increased beyond 600C.
When I transferred a 60GB file between the ASUS ROG STRIX Arion M.2 NVMe SSD Enclosure and another NVMe SSD attached through USB 3.2 GEN-2 and PCIe to measure its performance, the performance is averaged at 750 Mbps and peaked at 820 Mbps.
However, when I carried out the file copy test on the NVMe SSD connected to the system via a PCIe GEN 3×4 interface, I observed that the performance while transferring files from ASUS ROG STRIX Arion to the PCIe SSD was higher, and it peaked at 910Mbps.
How does the ASUS ROG STRIX Arion handle Heat Management?
ASUS ROG STRIX Arion M.2 NVMe SSD Enclosure comes with some attractive features, such as the aluminum alloy case combined with the internal thermal pads for effective heat dissipation.
This solves the problem of heat generation and emission, which caused the performance of few enclosures I used in the past few years under heavy load to throttle.
Apart from the heat throttling, the aluminum case provides extra protection and prevents scratches and scuffs, although the silicone bumper case may cause the device to heat up quickly.
When not in use, the device’s temperature was within the range of 340C-380C, and when I transferred files continuously for about an hour, the temperature rose to about 480C, which I consider to be poor.
ASUS ROG STRIX Arion SSD and USB Compatibility
ASUS ROG STRIX was designed innovatively to be compatible with various form factors within the range of 2230-2280 and an additional benefit of easy and screwdriver free installation. The ability of the enclosure to support both M and B+M keys is also a bonus.
The ASUS ROG STRIX Arion M.2 NVMe SSD Enclosure package box contains the ASUS ROG enclosure, a bumper case, a hook, an ASUS customized sim tray pusher tool, a large sheet of instructions, a pair of USB-C to USB-C cables and a USB-A to USB-C cable.
Ease of Installation
The installation is surprisingly simple and convenient. To install the NVMe SSD, remove the bumper case, locate the keyhole, which is beside the USB-C port, insert the customized sim card tray pusher, and poke the eject button.
After poking the top plate, gently lift from the sides to remove the entire top plate. There’s a flathead screw, which can be loosened with the other side of the sim tray pusher, and then you can insert the SSD.
Slightly tighten the screw and replace the top plate to complete the installation. Convenient, isn’t it?
ASUS ROG STRIX Arion Design
It is worthy of note that the ASUS ROG STRIX Arion M.2 NVMe SSD Enclosure comes with a slim design, and it is slimmer than many mobile phones though it is a lot denser. ASUS ROG STRIX, as a ROG product, comes with RGB LED lights, which supports Aura sync lighting technology and can synchronize it’s lighting with other components.
Although I wished it came in a metal hook and a more secure strap, but unfortunately, it comes with an easily breakable hook. This is the main reason why I don’t recommend ASUS ROG STRIX for outdoor usage unless the hook and strap are replaced with a sturdier one.
The hook is R-shaped and has a Velcro that secures it in the loop. Although the hook can break easily, it can be quickly replaced with a key ring and a proper hook or better still a clip.
Regardless, it still has a great deal of adaptability and functionality for its price compared to other NVMe enclosures in the market. It is a premium product with excellent quality. The bumper case and the R-shaped hook that comes in the accessories pack is an added advantage that you won’t find on much of the SSD enclosures as well.
Apart from the breakable R-shaped hook being a major turn off, ASUS ROG STRIX is worth giving a trial, and since the hook can be easily replaced, it is really a negligible excuse to not get an ASUS ROG STRIX Arion M.2 NVMe SSD Enclosure.
